It’s often a good idea to bracket all your shots and work out afterwards which exposure or exposures to use. You bracket because the range of tones in a scene may be greater than the dynamic range of a camera. I must admit it’s not something I’ve ever bothered to do.Įxposure bracketing is the most common reason. Exposure bracketing (For a larger tonal range than a single exposure)įocus bracketing is relevant in specific circumstances and I will briefly touch on this later.īracketing for accurate exposure to the right is a logical way to find the optimal exposure for a single exposure, bracketing upwards by say third stop intervals.Focus bracketing (For a greater depth of field than a single exposure).Sometimes, even when parts of your image are moving, you may be able to deal with that later and may want to bracket for the parts that are still. It becomes useful in landscape and architectural photography. There’s usually no point in bracketing when the subjects are moving, such as live music, wildlife, street photography and most portraits. Photography for me is about creating images, not capturing them, and the exposure is only part of that. ![]() For live music I want to express the music, for landscapes I want to create the feel of it or create something entirely new from it. A JPEG is what the camera sees but I want more than that. I also shoot RAW because I am interested in the best image quality I can get. I often bracket when shooting landscape because the dynamic range is often greater than a RAW file can capture. I shoot RAW because the dynamic range of a scene is often greater than a JPEG can capture. Modern camera sensors have greater dynamic range (they can record a greater range of tones) so there’s more leeway than there used to be. But if your image is just generally underexposed (and not out the the left of the histogram), you may still be able to recover a viable image, perhaps with some increase in noise. Similarly with shadows that really are completely underexposed. If parts of your image really are completely overexposed, those parts will have no detail and there is nothing to recover. Your camera “blinkies” are also based on the JPEG histogram. Usually for RAW you will have about two-thirds of a stop extra highlight room from what the histogram shows (and shadow room) but that varies for different cameras, exposure situations and probably lenses. This makes exposing to the right straightforward if you are shooting JPEG but more mysterious if you are shooting RAW. (Well, unless you have the rare and expensive Leica Monochrom). Your camera shows a histogram for a JPEG file, not a histogram for a RAW file. Exposing to the right is important because there is much more information in highlight areas with detail than in shadow areas.Ī histogram with a solid white line to the right, indicating overexposure There are partial exceptions to this where bright lights are part of your image such as concert lights, streetlights, the sun or specular highlights. This means that the histogram for an image in your camera should be as far as possible to the right side without there being a white line shooting up the border which indicates overexposure. Some people choose to shoot JPEG so they don’t have to process the image but that only works well if your subject has a limited tonal range and you expose accurately.įor any exposure, it is better to “expose to the right”. A JPEG file is a subset of a RAW file with limited capacity to make further changes. RAW files offer potentially greater quality for both tonality and colour than JPEGs though they do require processing. All images benefit from some processing, a few require very little. This is a stitched panorama with very little other processing. Post-processing is a very important part of that. The most important thing in Photography is to use your own vision to produce an image the way you visualise it, not what the camera or computer decides for you, or what fashions dictate. There is something for everyone and it covers quite a lot of ground so some may prefer to come back multiple times for different sections.
The background process which performs indexing for Spotlight is named mdworker. Spotlight-V100 index folder is a good way of checking that Spotlight has built its indexes on any given volume, although if the contents of the volume are excluded from indexing, there might not be any indexes there, of course. So however Spotlight found my crafted text file, it wasn’t through its normal index system. Spotlight-V100 folder, and here doesn’t even contain any files or data. There is, though, a folder named com~apple~system~spotlight, but that doesn’t look like a. Look inside the Mobile Documents folder, and there is no folder containing metadata indexes. List any storage mounted in /Volumes using ls -la, and you’ll see the characteristic top-level folder on that volume which contains Spotlight’s indexes:ĭrwx- 5 hoakley staff - 170. ![]() One of the peculiarities of iCloud Drive is that it is not mounted in a regular Unix way, in the /Volumes folder, but in a special folder named Mobile Documents in your Home Library folder (~/Library/Mobile Documents). As this is a hidden folder, the best way to do this is in Terminal. If you ever want to check Spotlight’s function anywhere else, simply get it to hunt a similar needle in the haystack of your storage.Īnother way of telling whether Spotlight has indexed any particular volume is to look for its metadata index folder on that volume. This doesn’t prove that Spotlight also works on documents which are moved by macOS under the Optimized Storage scheme, but it demonstrates that it does index at least some files stored there. Sure enough, Spotlight found it in that document on my iCloud Drive. I left it for a couple of hours, then ran a Spotlight search on the word. I then moved that file to my iCloud Drive, ensuring that it was removed from local storage. So I created a TextEdit text file with a little text padding, and the magic word, the needle I’m going to place in iCloud’s haystack. ![]() My choice was prestidigitation, which I don’t use very often, especially when drunk. If you ever want to check whether Spotlight is working – or, for example, whether it is respecting a folder which you have excluded from indexing – the best thing to do is create a text document containing a word which is very unlikely to appear in any other file in your storage, local or cloud. So I thought that this might be worth re-examining more thoroughly. If that was the case, it would be a major blow to Apple’s Optimized Storage scheme in Sierra: when macOS decides to move your least-used documents to iCloud to free up local storage, it would also take them out of range of Spotlight. Since then, Tom Eriksen commented that, in his experience, that wasn’t the case, and that when files are moved to iCloud Drive, and removed from local storage, they are lost to Spotlight search. Last year, I wrote here that Spotlight search should work on files stored in iCloud Drive, under macOS Sierra, unless you make your iCloud Drive an excluded drive from Spotlight’s indexing. ![]() Most notably, there are five main game modes: Classic, Dunk, Hockey, Explore and Party. The level of customisation is impressive, for example, with a huge array of options that go beyond simply choosing your course and the number of players. That’s not to say Golf With Your Friends has nothing going for it, of course: it absolutely does. Again, though, given that this is designed primarily as a multiplayer game – up to 12 players can take part – the complicated, maze-like nature of some holes means that players with experience will have a clear advantage there’s no real ‘great leveller’ here that gives everyone an equal chance of victory, something all of the best party games possess. Eventually, after playing courses a number of times, you’ll remember where the best routes are for each hole and will end up with a better score as a result. Some of the later holes in each course are pretty convoluted and require a fair amount of trial and error before you eventually realise where you’re supposed to go. This extends to playing the game as a whole, really. Once you get used to it it’s fine, but considering this is a game with a heavy multiplayer focus, it’s not unrealistic to suggest that confusion can break out among some less-experienced players. In some modes, the left stick also applies spin to the ball, which can initially cause some problems your power is shown as a horizontal gauge on the bottom of the screen so your instinct will be to move the stick left and right to set your power – but that sets the spin instead. The shot process can take a little getting used to: you aim with the right stick, choose your power in advance by moving the left stick up and down, then press A to hit the ball. Each has its own charm and its own lovely little details, but if we had one criticism it’s that each course only has a single music track that plays on a loop, which can eventually get to you considering it takes roughly half an hour to get through all 18 holes. There’s also one based on Worms, because of course there is. Each course has a theme, from sensible ones like a forest and a desert to slightly more off-the-wall offerings like a space station, a volcano and a world made out of sweets. The game contains 11 courses at launch, each with 18 holes, giving nearly 200 holes in total (a twelfth course based on Team17’s prison breakout sim The Escapists is coming soon). It’s actually even more literal than you’d think, but we’ll address that in a second. Anyone expecting anything other than a golf-themed game with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer would be setting themselves up for disappointment, and with a title like that, they’d only really have themselves to blame. In terms of doing what it says on the tin it’s fair to say that Golf With Your Friends doesn’t pull any punches. At the time of writing, however, it’s safe to say that the idea of standing in a small area next to people from a different household is frowned upon at best luckily, Team17 is here with Golf With Your Friends, in the hope that it can offer the next best thing. The lower two panels progressively zoom out to show dust and gas structures on much larger scales. The Quasar Drive-In of Valley, Nebraska pays tribute to a classic family outing while also showing modern movies. The top panel zooms in to show the feeding black hole on a scale roughly the size of the solar system. Just remember that this picture might change over time as we learn more! These panels dissect one version of the current quasar model each cross-section is an edge-on view at a different zoom level. While the details are still up for debate, we can use current knowledge to paint a general picture of a quasar. Astronomers have to ferret out the details using other techniques, such as analyzing spectroscopy (spreading out the light by wavelength) or light curves (spreading out the light by its arrival time). Yet quasars often outshine their hosts.ĭespite their brilliance, quasars are so small and distant that even the most powerful telescope cannot resolve all the structures within a quasar. ![]() That dwarfs in comparison to its host galaxy the Milky Way for comparison is roughly 100,000 light- years across. The size of a quasar accretion disk, which scales with the mass of its black hole, is typically a few light-days across. Farther out from the black hole, the prolific dust and gas glow at infrared wavelengths. Jets shooting out along the black hole’s poles emit everything from radio waves to X-rays. Visible and ultraviolet light come from the glowing disk of infalling material, while even hotter gas above the disk shines at X-ray energies. What Does a Quasar Look Like?Ī quasar is not only the feeding black hole itself, but the light-producing structures that surround it. The nearest quasar is Markarian 231, which lies about 600 million light-years from Earth. Supermassive black holes in nearby galaxies typically do not have that much gas available to them, so quasars are typically found in distant galaxies. The gas spirals around as it falls in, heating up in the process and emitting radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. They reside in galaxies with plentiful gas supplies, perhaps supplied by a recent galaxy-galaxy collision, and they gorge on the inflowing material. Other dormant black holes occasionally shred an infalling star, making their presence known by the flare of radiation that ensues.īut quasars are a different breed of black hole. We know it’s there, though, from the orbits of stars around it. Our Milky Way’s behemoth weighs in at 4.3 million solar masses, but its starvation diet mutes all but faint flashes and flickers. In fact, almost every large galaxy hosts a black hole with the mass of millions to billions of Suns, and many of these black holes lurk in the dark. It’s a bit of a contradiction to call a black hole luminous black holes themselves are, of course, black. Now, the term is a catch-all for all feeding, and therefore luminous supermassive black holes, also often called active galactic nuclei. Quasar is short for quasi-stellar radio source, because astronomers first discovered quasars in 1963 as objects that looked like stars but emitted radio waves. An artist's impression of a quasar within its host galaxyĪ quasar is a supermassive black hole feeding on gas at the center of a distant galaxy. |
